God is a Disturbing Presence

Are we not like the little boy who is afraid in his room at night and calls his mother?

His mother reassures him not to be, afraid, since God is there in the room with him. As the mother returns downstairs, she hears the boy say anxiously: "All right, God, it's okay for you to be here; just don't move or I'll be scared to death!" We also reassure ourselves that everything must be, all right, for God is here with us, and we graciously give our consent to his presence. But we add secretly: "Just don't come to us in anything as personal as a dream or an experience which really involves our personality or we will be frightened to death!" (John A. Sanford, Dreams (HarperSanFrancisco, 1968), p. 96.
