Creating an Atmosphere of Acceptance

How does a priest or counselor act in such a case?

I knew that three things were important, but one above all: the relationship that might spring up between us. In,a case like this the self-reproach is so great that the counselee cannot accept herself without the help of another human being, who sees the darkness of her thoughts as well as she does and yet accepts them. Only then can the healing work begin. To create this atmosphere of acceptance may require from the counselor great patience and much careful, attentive listening, for the counselee will let out just a little information at a time to see how it is accepted before divulging more. All this requires a great love for the soul. The priest or minister who gives a quick sermon, a bit of hurried advice, or a nice prayer is rejecting the human soul and the God who loves it. The only way such a soul can be reclaimed is through the patience of the counselor, who opens the way for the healing, which comes from God. (John A. Sanford, Dreams: God's Forgotten Langauge (HarperSanFrancisc0, 1968), p.134.
